Report: Most Online Transactions Happening on Mobile Devices

Mobile commerce surpassed 50 percent of North American online transactions in 2019, a new report from Comscore has found.

Mobile commerce reached 51 percent of total online transactions in North America in Q4 2019, growing from 46 percent in Q2 2019, the research firm’s 2020 “Global Mobile Payments Outlook” whitepaper reported. In the Asia Pacific and Latin America regions, the share was even higher in Q4 2019 at 58 percent.

While e-commerce transactions continue to shift towards mobile platforms, that does not necessarily mean that mobile wallet use is growing, the report suggests. In North America, the share of mobile wallet transactions on mobile web and apps barely moved between Q2 2019 and Q4 2019, up from 22.2 percent to 22.5 percent. Asia Pacific had the highest percentage of use of mobile wallets in 2019 across the regions surveyed, driven largely by growth in India and Japan. Mobile wallets grabbed 42.5 percent of mobile transactions in the region during Q4 2019. Usage dropped in Europe, from 41.5 percent in Q2 2019 to 38.5 percent in Q4 2019. In Latin America, usage stayed consistent, ticking up from 33.9 percent in Q2 2019 to 34.0 percent in Q4 2019.
