New Data from ETA Member Visa Shows Growing Contactless Adoption

Tap-and-go continues to tap-and-grow in the United States in 2019, new data from ETA member Visa indicates.

According to a blog post published in May 2019 on Visa’s website, adoption of contactless payments like NFC-enabled bankcards is growing among consumers stateside. The merchant acquiring industry has seen increased adoption at the merchant level. In the blog post, Visa cited that 80 of the company’s top 100 merchants by transactions I the US currently offer tap-and-pay at checkout.

Momentum continues on the issuing side as well. Eleven of the top 25 card issuers in the United States are rolling out contactless cards, Visa reports.

“Much like other markets around the world, consumers have quickly embraced the speed and convenience of tapping to pay,” the blog post said.

Globally, contactless payments have grown as well. According to Visa, nearly half (48 percent) of face-to-face Visa transactions outside of the US occur with a tap.
