Over 180 payments, banking, venture capital, software and technology leaders gathered at ETA’s TRANSACT Tech San Francisco (TTSF) last week, a one-day event that explored the intersection of technological innovation and payments products and services. Hosted at the Wells Fargo Connections Center in the heart of San Francisco, the event’s agenda featured top speakers from the payments ecosystem as well as ample networking opportunity for attendees.
Leading off the day was a keynote from Secil Watson, EVP and Head of Digital Solutions for Business at Wells Fargo. Watson’s presentation gave data-driven insights from one of the world’s largest financial institutions on how customer touchpoints and experiences with digital banking and payments products can be improved today for the demands of tomorrow.
Morning panel discussions included “The Future of Payments – Taking the Longview” in which talech CEO Irv Henderson moderated a lively discussion between Derrick Carpenter, SVP product, Portfolio and Integrated Payments at Bank of America Merchant Services, Andy Dresner, Head of Payment Strategy Group at JP Morgan Chase, and Brian Mahoney, Chief Strategy Officer at Elavon. Integrated payments also came into focus in the early portion of the agenda; sessions on the impact of integrated payments services on banks and on processors rounded out the morning, featuring insights from leaders at First Data, EVO Payments, Global Payments, Vend, Homebase, Bank of America Merchant Services and Wells Fargo.
Like all ETA events, networking was a central theme of the day. Networking breaks punctuated the busy agenda, and an extended networking lunch afforded attendees from across the payments ecosystem – startups, VCs, ISVs, PayFacs, acquirers and more – to make connections.
New payments innovations were the focus for the second half of the day. Attendees heard from executives at leading hardware solutions providers in a discussion on how the market for POS devices and other payments hardware has evolved in recent years. Brad Giles, SVP of Marketing and Sales at Ingenico, Joe Mach, President of North America at Verifone, and Mark Schulze, co-founder of Clover and VP of Business Development at First Data, gave their insights in a discussion moderated by Boomtown founder and CEO Chip Kahn.Peter Shenk,
Director of Partnerships at Womply, directed a discussion later in the afternoon on how novel ways to leverage data are creating opportunities for payments companies to deliver more value to their merchants. Panelists included JP Morgan Chase Executive Director Brad Hawley, Adyen Data Science and Analytics Manager Mika Nishiya, and Homebase Founder and CEO John Waldman.
Peter Christodoulo, partner at Francisco Partners and architect of the recent acquisition of Verifone by Francisco Partners for over $3 billion, gave his insights on the form and function of private equity in the payments marketplace, and his perspective on the future of payments products and services, in a fireside keynote chat with ETA CEO Jason Oxman in the penultimate session for the day.
Concluding the day’s content was a panel discussion on peer-to-peer payments moderated by ETA VP of Industry Affairs Amy Zirkle, featuring Zelle VP Jamie Armistead, Ant Financial Head of Global Key Accounts Carol Grunberg, and Visa VP and Global Head of Visa Direct Platform Vikram Modi.
