Q+A: What You Need to Know About Serverless Computing

Payments companies are turning to the cloud to manage their data, optimize compliance with the PCI Data Security Standard, and streamline a wide range of processes.

With serverless computing, cloud providers such take on the responsibility of the servers, leaving the developer simply responsible for the code they write. Pricing is based on resources consumed rather than capacity purchased in advance. This can make it easy for companies to nimbly scale up their operations.

Serverless computing, then, is a promising technology with applications for companies in all areas of the payments ecosystem.

In a webinar on January 22nd, 2020 at 1:00 pm, four payments and serverless computing experts will explain how serverless computing works, discuss the security implications of leveraging serverless within your organization, and examine the business impacts of switching to serverless.

The webinar presenters are:

  • Kevin Shamoun, Chief Information and Technical Officer, FortisPay (Fortis Payment Systems)
  • Gary Brickhouse, VP of GRC Services and CISO at GuidePoint Security
  • Chris Munns, Principal and the lead Developer Advocate for Serverless Applications, Amazon Web Services
  • Peter Wagener, Chief Technology Officer, CardFlight

In advance of the webinar, Transaction Trends interviewed Kevin Shamoun to get his insights into the webinar’s content and value.

Transaction Trends: Why are more payments companies turning to the cloud?

Shamoun: The ability to scale instantly as transactions/API requests are requested is very attractive for IT departments that must deal with seasonal types of capacity. The days of trying to forecast the capacity you would need for the holidays or running a Superbowl ad are behind us when utilizing cloud computing.

What should companies keep in mind when considering serverless computing?

There are a lot of tools in the IT toolbox so be mindful of the various ways you can architect a solution.  While various solutions will work, keeping scaling and data management in the forefront of the design process is very important. The amount of logging and data generated in a cloud environment is something to be considerate of.

What can webinar attendees expect to learn from this webinar?

Attendees will learn more about “Cloud Computing”,  hear real-world examples of how it is being used, and get insight into how you can be secure in this scenario without owning the physical infrastructure such as in a traditional data center.
