The committee will address an array of topics and objectives:

  • Educate the community — We will help members build a strong understanding of the emerging cryptocurrency industry and the associated technology.
  • Provide an immersive experience — The committee will take a hands-on approach from downloading a wallet, providing crypto, and taking the time to help all members interact on the platform.
  • Anticipate emerging markets — Help move ETA into the future of payments, staying ahead of the curve on technology, research, and development, and providing tools to carry out crypto payment processing and integrate products, processes, and tech into the payment world.
  • Demonstrate utility — The committee will show why embracing crypto is essential in the payments industry, how we will use crypto for future transactions, and how this will help our industry advance.
  • Stay competitive — The committee will help the payment industry stay current and relevant throughout this dynamic revolution.
  • Lead the industry — Committee members will become leaders in crypto for the rest of the payment industry, guiding policy and practice for the entire field as we embrace the future of crypto as it occurs.

The ETA Crypto and Blockchain Committee will move beyond the traditional committee meeting format and launch the week of September 12 with 10-week immersive 45-minute modules.

  • This hands-on experience will allow members to become immersed in crypto, blockchain, and the tech powering our future economy.
  • After the 10-week series, all participants will receive an ETA crypto payments certification and a website badge.

Weekly Schedule of Immersive Modules:

  • Week 1 — What is cryptocurrency? A general overview.
In our initial meeting, we will provide a general overview of crypto, how it works and why we should embrace cryptocurrency as a major disruptor in the payment industry.
  • Week 2 — Your crypto wallet: Download a wallet and begin interacting with crypto.
We will host an interactive demo of downloading a digital wallet, getting registered, and showing how easy it is to onboard future merchants and customers. We will ensure everyone has a thorough understanding of the backend of crypto payments and demo what the merchant does, what the consumer does, and how we finalize transactions.
  • Week 3 — How does it work: Backend understanding of the tech.
After everyone has a wallet, we will discuss how it works and answer questions such as: What is a blockchain address? What is a hashrate? And what are the cryptocurrencies out there?
  • Week 4 — What is blockchain? Understanding decentralization definition.
This session will focus on understanding the foundational technology that crypto is built upon — blockchain. The participant will thoroughly understand the distributed ledger and learn about the multiple blockchains and applications.
  • Week 5 — Blockchain application: Opportunities in decentralized data.
We will explore different blockchains and sidechains and the opportunities for development, such as utilizing the tech in logistics to record supply chain movement, applications in the medical field, and other finance and data opportunities.
  • Week 6 — Major coins and Altcoins: Mining, movement, and more.
Refocusing on cryptocurrency itself, we will look at the big volume coins, original coins, and how they work, including the mining process, movement of crypto, verifying transactions, understanding hashrates, and a high level of how cryptography works. We will discuss altcoins, their purpose, the rewards process, and use cases such as gamer tokens and securities vs. regular coins.
  • Week 7 — Stablecoins: Coupling cryptocurrency with fiat currencies.
This session will focus on stablecoins, including their purpose and how they are pegged to regular fiat currency to keep static value. We will explore use cases such as cross-border transactions and how they can be so fast compared to swift transactions.
  • Week 8 — Developing regulations: Looking ahead at the unfolding regulatory and compliance landscape.
The regulatory landscape of cryptocurrency is developing quickly. We will look at the current legislative framework, the pros and cons of potential policy, and how to ensure the payment industry’s voice is part of this vital conversation as it unfolds.
  • Week 9 — Crypto payments IRL: Integrating into your current portfolio of clients and ISVs.
This critical session will look at the real-world utility of crypto, including accepting crypto payments for merchants and shifting from virtual to IRL transactions. We will host an interactive discussion of how the payment industry can embrace crypto and all its opportunity and provide actionable tips on integrating crypto payments into your business.
  • Week 10 — NFTs, web3 and the metaverse: Adjacent tech and how crypto intersects.
