Study Finds Most Consumers Will Do Some or All Holiday Shopping in December, Use Credit Cards

A recent study from CardRates.com has good news for holiday season procrastinators: you’re not alone. According to the survey, which polled 500 website users throughout the last week of November, 78 percent of respondents will shop for holiday gifts in December, and 45 percent say they have most of their shopping still to do this month. For 25 percent of respondents, their shopping had yet to begin.

Credit cards were the most popular payment method among surveyed shoppers, with 37 percent of consumers saying they’ll use one most frequently to make gift purchases in December. Cash was the second most frequent with just under a third of surveyed consumers saying they’ll use it most frequently. Cryptocurrency, checks and online payment services all scored under 5 percent, according to the survey.

In total, six in ten consumers said they will use credit cards for some of their holiday purchases. One in five said they would use their card for all of their gifts, with another 21 percent saying they’ll use one for at least half of their purchases.
